Modern Dental just got a whole lot cooler for the summer with the addition of Dr. Travis Royce. Please help us in welcoming our newest Boise dentist to the team!
We sat down with Dr. Royce for a short interview in between patients to get to know our new dentist better. Let’s learn more about the life of Dr. Royce below.
Name – Dr. Travis Royce
Family – 5 children (4 boys, 1 girl)
Education – High School: Valley View
Undergraduate: Eastern Oregon University
Graduate: Ohio State University
Specialties – Orthodontics, IV Sedation, Implants
What did you want to be as a kid when you grew up?
I thought I was going to be a pilot forever and ever. When I was a little older, in school I learned to love math and science, but even by the time I went to college, dentistry was far down the list. I thought I was going to be a physician, but after interviewing a lot of doctors, many of them said that if they could go back and do everything over again, they’d go into dentistry. That was what led me down the path that I’m happily on now.
How do you want to be remembered as a professional?
A few years down the road, as a professional I’d like to be remembered for being very thorough and always putting my patients’ best interest at the forefront.
Who was a major influence in your life?
My step dad, Randy Robertson, was a major influence. He married my mother when I was 8 years old and just took wonderful care of us. He is a standup, top notch guy. He’s honest, and he just takes care of everybody else.
The funny thing about Randy is that if anything is going to happen to someone, it’s going to happen to Randy. We had a boat growing up, and on more than one occasion we took the boat up to McCall and he would forget to put the plugs in and we’d wake up the next morning and the boat would be at the bottom of the lake! We’ve even had both tires go out on the boat trailer at the exact same time with Randy.
It’s Murphy’s Law – if anything bad is going to happen, it’s going to happen, and it’s going to happen to Randy (maybe we should rename it to Randy’s Law?). But he never gets upset. It never bothers him, that’s the thing. He’s always “Cup half full, and always has great advice for life.”
Do you have a favorite book?
Right now I’m reading A Long Way Home, which the movie Lion is based on. My favorite book of all time is either The River Runs Through It or Where the Red Fern Grows.
Can you tell us about an achievement you’re proud of?
I recently completed my IV sedation course. It was weeks and weeks of flying down to California for training. It was nice. It was very difficult, but now we are able to do conscious IV sedation in-house.
If you could master one skill you don’t have right now, what would it be?
[thinks for a minute]
I’ve got 400 ideas in mind, but I think fly-tying. I love fly fishing. I try tying my own flies and I’ve caught a few fish with them, but those are obviously the fish that haven’t seen many flies. I’ll go fish up on the middle fork of the Boise, up toward Atlanta. We go on trips every year over to Henry’s Fork and the Madison River. I love it.
If you were in charge of a TV network for a day, what would you have them play?
I would do an outdoor type of show, maybe hunting or fishing. I’m addicted to the outdoor channel. I watch them go fishing for pike and things, and it just looks crazy. They really attack that thing [the lure].
Would you rather fight one horse-sized duck or 100 duck-sized horses?
I’d probably fight the 100 duck sized horses. I could probably take a few of them out before I went down, but that horse-sized duck would be trouble.
So next time you’re at the Modern Dental office in Southeastern Boise, say hi to Dr. Royce and welcome him to the family!
