What is IV Sedation Dentistry?
Even tough dental work doesn’t have to be uncomfortable. Sedation dentistry, or “sleep dentistry,” can be relaxing and pain-free.
Does dental anxiety make you think twice about taking a trip to the dentist in Boise? With sedation dentistry, there’s no reason to be nervous! At Modern Dental, we have the tools available to alleviate your fear and anxiety by helping you to stay relaxed and calm during your treatment.
IV sedation is a great solution if you have a fear of the dentist that regularly keeps you from optimal dental care, if you have sensitive teeth, or if you simply need to have a large amount of dental work done at once.
IV sedation is different from general anesthesia, which chemically puts you to sleep. Despite being referred to as “sleep dentistry,” IV sedation simply leaves the patient very relaxed, enough so that they may fall asleep on their own, but can be easily awakened.
This method of sedation allows the patient to understand and respond to any requests from their Boise dentist, aka Dr. Royce, remaining conscious and aware of their surroundings, but relaxed and detached from the procedure. While the patient might be awake, they likely won’t even remember the operation or dental procedure!
At Modern Dental, we like this form of sedation because it allows the doctor to immediately adjust medication levels through the intravenous connection, while also monitoring important factors such as heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels of the patient.
Medications Used for IV Sedation
The medicines used for IV sedation are a class of benzodiazepine, drugs that are used to relieve anxiety. They don’t dull your senses or mask pain; they simply relax you. No need to fear—we also use local anesthetics during your procedure and have other options via the IV, should the need arise.
This medication is stronger and more customized than an oral medication such as Valium, or even the popular nitrous oxide, which is inhaled.
What’s the best part? You won’t remember a thing about your dental procedure, as IV sedation results in a short period of amnesia-like symptoms that wear off shortly after treatment.
Our Boise dental team is here to make your dental work as comfortable as possible. IV sedation may be the perfect solution for your needed dental procedures. As each patient is unique, talk to the doctors and team at Modern Dental in south east Boise to see if IV sedation is right for you.
