Read on to find out if dental veneers might be right for you.
What Are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers are thin, custom-made shells that cover the front of your teeth. They can change the size, shape, or color of your teeth. The bond is incredibly strong, usually lasting for many years before needing work. Veneers mimic the natural properties of your teeth, so they will look, feel, and function like natural teeth.
Good Candidates for Dental Veneers
You don’t have to have a movie star budget to get a movie star smile. Veneers are an affordable way for people from all walks of life to get the dental makeover you’ve always wanted. This procedure is most often used for the following treatments, most of which are cosmetic:
- Discolored Teeth – Can be caused by coffee, tea, soda, and tobacco use. Poor dental hygiene or thin enamel can also cause teeth to have stronger shades of yellow. Veneers will brighten teeth to the perfect color.
- Damaged Teeth – Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth can be made perfect again with veneers.
- Misaligned or Misshapen Teeth – A tooth that is an uneven length, has a bulge, or is otherwise standing out from the rest of your teeth isn’t a life sentence.
- Gaps in Teeth – Patients with a small gap between their front teeth (for example) can make great use of veneers to close up that space.
What to Expect When Getting Dental Veneers
Dental veneers are typically a 3-step process. Even if multiple teeth are being treated, no extra visits are usually required, as we can treat them simultaneously.
First Visit – Consultation
During your first visit, we’ll determine if dental veneers are the right solution for what you’re trying to achieve. We have lots of tools in the dentistry toolbox, and this is just one treatment among many we can use. We’ll likely take X-rays (if we don’t have current imaging) or take impressions to get a perfect understanding of what treatment will involve.
Second Visit – Preparation
After we’ve determined that veneers are right for you, we’ll schedule your second appointment to prepare your tooth for the procedure. If you’ve ever had a crown, the preparation for a veneer is similar. After numbing the working area, a thin amount of enamel is shaved from the tooth’s surface. Our team will make a model of the result and have the lab build your veneers to our exact specifications. We might place some temporary dental veneers in the meantime so that your teeth will look and function normally.
Third Visit – Placing the Veneers
The big day has arrived! First, the dentist will do a dry fit to make sure the new veneers are perfect. We might make some small adjustments to get it just right. The teeth being worked on are then cleaned and the surface prepared for our special cement, which will permanently attach the veneers. A curing light is then applied to harden the cement (that’s what makes it special). After a little polish, you’re all done!
Taking Care of Your Dental Veneers
We might schedule a follow-up visit a few weeks after the procedure to make sure everything is working the way it’s supposed to. Other than that, sticking to a healthy oral hygiene routine will keep your veneers looking great for years to come.
